Alan Permain: Fernando behaved like a textbook

Alpine’s best qualifying result for the Singapore Grand Prix was Fernando Alonso’s fifth fastest time, who claimed to have topped out. His teammate Esteban Ocon only showed the eighteenth result and explained this with a problem with the brakes.

Fernando Alonso (5th): “Qualifying in fifth place is a great result. I believe we have achieved the maximum in difficult circumstances. The track condition was constantly changing, so you had to guess what the grip would be in the next corner. I had confidence in the car, which is exactly what is needed on urban roads and helped me understand the conditions and determine when it was time to switch to slicks.

I hope the race goes smoothly for us tomorrow, but let’s see what the weather will be like. I’ll start just two positions behind the podium, so if we stay focused and start clean, we can expect a good result.”

Esteban Ocon (18th): “Qualifying turned out to be difficult for me. I’m disappointed I didn’t get to the first part because I had a high pace all weekend. I had problems with the brakes which affected today’s result.

The positive results include the fact that the car is fast, so the goal for tomorrow is to break through to the points. It is difficult to overtake on this track, but as usual I will attack as hard as I can to give the team a good result.”

Alan Permain, sports director: “We have mixed feelings after qualifying – Fernando set the fifth fastest time, and Esteban – eighteenth. Fernando behaved like a textbook – coped with everything wonderfully and achieved a high result. I thought more was possible, but he tried his best and took a fine position at the start of the race.

Esteban reported problems with the brakes on the last lap. We’ll find out what’s causing it.

Qualifying is always difficult when the track starts to dry up, so I thank the team for the great work. Tomorrow Fernando will try to earn a lot of points. As for Esteban, we know it’s hard to overtake on this track, but we’ll do everything we can to make sure he fights for a top ten place as well.
