On Saturday, representatives of the Mercedes team and Lewis Hamilton were called to the stewards of the Singapore Grand Prix over the piercing in the rider’s nose. Since this season, the FIA has been stricter in enforcing the cockpit jewelry ban, and television footage from Singapore clearly showed the seven-time world champion’s piercing.
Lewis Hamilton explained to the stewards that he initially took the jewelry out of his nose, but on the advice of doctors, he put it back in place as he started to develop a mild inflammation at the puncture site. The stewards took this into account and, after consulting with medical representative Dr. Ian Roberts, not good.
However, the Mercedes team was fined. Before the start of the first training session, the team filled out a mandatory form and submitted it to the FIA, according to which Lewis was not pierced, which was not true. Mercedes explained that they submitted the form before it became known that Lewis planned not to have the piercing done on the advice of doctors.
The FIA concluded that Mercedes’ violation was unintentional but could have been prevented if the team had clarified the driver with up-to-date information before submitting the form. Mercedes was therefore fined 25,000 euros.
