Guanyu Zhou was ahead of veteran team-mate Valtteri Bottas for the sixth time this season in qualifying in Singapore.
Guanyu Zhou (15th): “Overall I’m happy with the way the weekend went, as this is my first performance in Singapore. There is a feeling that I could have done more in qualifying, but I enjoyed driving this difficult track.
The first part of qualifying went well, but the second part was a bit disappointing. In the first lap I had to slow down because of the yellow flags and in the second lap I showed my time. Then we decided to take a chance and switch to slicks to try and make it to the final, but the grip wasn’t enough and I couldn’t improve. I think if we left the intermediate tires for the last try I would be in the top ten.
Let’s see what the weather will be like tomorrow. Our car is more competitive on a dry track, but anything can happen here.”
Valtteri Bottas (16th): “We had a good pace on the dry track, so I’m disappointed that I was out of the fight in the first part of qualifying. The conditions were quite difficult, the track condition was constantly changing, dry parts alternated with wet ones and in the end I had no luck with the timing. We planned to spend the entire first session on one set of tires but at the end of the segment they lost their effectiveness and it was too late to make a pit stop.
From 16th in Singapore, this track is the second most difficult to overtake, but I believe in miracles and anything can happen here.
