Riccardo: I had to defend more than attack

Team McLaren in Miami – for various reasons – did not earn points. Only Lando Norris had real chances of this, but he retired after colliding with Pierre Gasly’s car, and Daniel Riccardo finished 11th on the track, but was then fined and moved up to 13th.

Lando Norris (didn’t finish): “The race was tough and hot. Too bad it ended so stupidly. I heard from someone that Gasly was generally going to retire due to some issues – if this is true then his actions were stupid. After all, if you plan to get out, step aside, do not interfere with those who continue the race.

However, he looked in the right mirror, and he moved to the left across the lane. Of course someone will say I could have left him more space, but the same goes for him, because in the end everything ended in a crash.

Overall, this is most likely a racing incident. But luckily we didn’t lose that much – maybe a point or two, although it would be better if we earned these points. But sometimes it happens, so next time you should try to perform better.

Daniel Riccardo (13th): “It seemed to me that there were a lot of events in the race. There was a struggle, but there were also funny moments, but we had to defend more than attack. Although we did everything we could to hold the position.

I think the section on the Medium tires could have been longer, but I’m not sure we were fast enough for this. But when we switched to hard tires, the problems started. Closer to the finish, when the track was already covered with a layer of used rubber, we simply couldn’t drive at the pace of other, faster cars.

But I fought and thought I could get closer to the top ten, but still we didn’t have enough speed. So we need to keep working on improving the efficiency of the machine.

I believe our weaknesses have been revealed on this track, as there are many long corners and long straights. Let’s hope the track in Barcelona suits us better, so I’m already getting ready for the next race.”
