In Miami, Ferrari racers occupied the entire front row of the grid, but lost speed to Max Verstappen in the distance. For the podium in Barcelona, the team is preparing new items in the hope that they will add…
Mattia Binotto, Team Principal: “Red Bull had a speed advantage in Miami on Sunday, just like they were a few tenths faster at Imola. But they have been constantly improving the car since the start of the season and we will present the first updates only in Barcelona and hope that they will work and allow us to fight on an equal footing.
Red Bull spends money on updates, but at some point, due to budget constraints, they will stop adding, and we still have money for this. After five races we are still in the lead in both championships and I look to the future with optimism.”
Charles Leclerc (2nd): “The car worked well on hard tires but everything was decided during the first stint – I started on Medium and after the first five or six laps the front tires started to lose efficiency. Because of this, I lost the lead and lost a lot of time in the first segment. We need to find and eliminate the cause before the next race.
Back then we were very competitive on Hard, not inferior to Max in speed. I was hoping to regain the lead after the safety car started, but it didn’t work out.
We have to analyze the last piece on Medium – it was our weak point in the race. In qualifying we manage to work effectively with softer formations and at long distance our opponents are better at that. We have to solve this problem.”
Carlos Sainz (3rd): “After two failed races, it’s nice to be back on the podium, especially with two cars. My race was difficult, after Friday’s accident my neck hurt – and halfway through the distance it started to interfere. Another problem was the defense against Sergio Perez’ attacks at the end of the race. He had new tires and I knew the smallest mistake would cost me third place. I managed to fend off his attacks, the podium was a worthy reward.
I needed a race like that to forget past failures. I use this podium as a starting point for future success. My home Grand Prix is just around the corner, I will try to approach it in the best possible way.
