Alonso: I made a mistake and my apologies to Pierre

The Alpine team in Miami finished in the top ten with two cars, but then Fernando Alonso was penalized twice with a five-second penalty and finished 11th. The press release was issued by the team before the double fine was announced.

Esteban Ocon (8th): “What a race! Many thanks to the team for the hard work at night to recover the car after a major accident on Saturday. The mechanics are the real stars of this weekend.

I’m glad I got some points after starting from last position. I am certainly satisfied with the result of the race, taking into account the problems on Saturday. The car was fast, the team developed a great strategy – we controlled the race and successfully concluded an exciting first weekend in Miami. Now it is necessary to maintain the momentum in the next phase after returning to Europe.”

Fernando Alonso (9th, after the second penalty – 11th): “I’m glad I came back on points today. In the beginning I had some great overtakes and regained a few positions. I was a bit unlucky with the timing of the safety car, while it played into the hands of others. Without the safety car I would have been fighting for seventh or eighth place.

I made a mistake trying to overtake Pierre Gasly – my mistake, my apologies. In general we have a good race pace. The race proved to be physically demanding due to the heat and humidity. I think we deserve the points.”

Laurent Rossic, Executive Director: “We are pleased with the outcome of the race. We leave Miami with points with two cars, which is important after the disappointing result at Imola.

Thanks to Esteban for having a strong race and moving up to eighth after starting from last position. Such a result would not have been possible without the excellent work of the mechanics who repaired his car after Saturday’s accident. Points earned are a reward for them.

Fernando also had a confident race, mostly succeeding in the start, as he regained the positions and climbed into the top ten. Due to a five-second penalty, he dropped to ninth place. We accept this result taking into account the qualifying events.

The podium in Miami proved to be radiant both on and off the track. We thank everyone on the team for their hard work this weekend. The squad must continue to earn points, so we are looking forward to Barcelona, where we return to the familiar track. We aim to continue the scoring streak in the next races.”
