Haas F1 in conversation with Mick Schumacher

Before the start of the weekend in Singapore, when asked when to expect news about his future, Mick Schumacher replied briefly: “In Japan.”

According to Sky Deutschland, after months of hesitation, negotiations between the seven-time world champion’s son and the Haas F1 team have indeed begun and the parties have finally begun discussing the issue of his contract extension.

Mick’s current deal with the US team will expire at the end of this year and Haas F1 head Gunter Haas has said more than once that they are looking at other potential candidates.

In particular, the team analyzed the scenario where Kevin Manussen’s new partner in 2023 could be the veteran Niko Hulkenberg, who has served as Aston Martin’s reserve pilot for the past few years.

Daniel Ricciardo was also named among the theoretically possible candidates, but this is a less realistic option, as the Australian is still one of the five highest paid Formula 1 racers. It is unlikely that Haas will be willing to accept his financial terms.

As the team’s management started negotiations with Schumacher in Singapore, there is a good chance that the parties will come to an agreement and Mick can keep his place next season. Like it or not, we’ll soon find out – perhaps already in the days of the Japanese weekend, as he promised.

If this doesn’t happen, Mick will have few other options, as apart from Haas there are formally only vacancies in Alpine F1 (where they have apparently already decided and intend to sign a contract with Pierre Gasly) and in Williams, where, in theory, they could they are interested in a driver with a loud last name. Besides, Ralf Schumacher once played for Williams and won all his six wins by driving the cars of this particular team.
