Last weekend Daniel Ricciardo took 5th place in the Singapore Grand Prix and so far this is his best result in a season that has been generally unlucky for him. McLaren declined his services and next year Lando Norris’ new partner will be 21-year-old debutant Oscar Piastri, also an Australian, and Ricciardo’s prospects are still bleak.
In Singapore, he was seen leaving the Mercedes site, and France’s Canal+ reported that Ricciardo’s negotiations for a reserve driver contract were already at an advanced stage.
When asked about his future plans at a press conference in Suzuka, he replied: “Am I in a hurry to make that decision? I wouldn’t say there’s a problem with this, but I just decided to take a moment to think about which option is best to choose.
There is no rush, I feel no pressure and I don’t have to sign anything. I’m not going to sign the first available contract and then be in the tail of the pack. For now I will continue to perform in the remaining races of this season and gradually it will become clear how best to proceed.
If I show good results it will only make my job easier, everything looks better with them. There’s no point in asking if I want to keep racing – of course I do. It was nice to show a good result in Singapore, but it won’t affect further events in any way.”
Daniel also said he will be following the famous Bathurst 1000 race, to be held this weekend at Australia’s Mount Panorama circuit – this is the 11th round of the Supercars touring car championship and one of the most important motorsport events of the year.
By the way, McLaren Racing CEO Zach Brown is a co-owner of the Walkinshaw Andretti United team that participates in this series.
“I’m following the Bathurst 1000 in the sense that I’m definitely going to look at a selection of the best moments and try to figure out who is the fastest there,” said the Australian. “I don’t know yet who will be considered favorite this weekend, but this is a great race. My parents decided to go there first, and it will be interesting for me to talk to them later and hear their impressions.
I’ve watched this race on TV since I was a kid, it’s always been an event, I tried to put everything else aside to watch the Bathurst 1000 so I have a lot of fond memories of it and hope it will be interesting are this year.”
