Riccardo: Miami track is like a road on my farm

All weekend in Miami, Formula 1 drivers were critical of the track laid out around the Hard Rock Stadium complex, and mostly it wasn’t about the ring’s configuration, although many didn’t like the narrow twisty section – a number of corners 13-16. They were particularly dissatisfied with the quality and condition of the asphalt.

Daniel Ricciardo, in particular, jokingly compared the tarmac of the American track to the gravel paths around his Australian farm after the race. However, he added a warning that Formula 1 drivers may be “too spoiled” by the higher quality of the surface at other more well-known tracks.

When Ricciardo was asked if the quality of the Miami circuit was suitable for Formula 1, the McLaren driver replied: “I would say no, but maybe we are just too spoiled. Let’s just say that, compared to what we are used to , such asphalt is more typical of some rear areas.

It reminds me of the road surfaces I drive on my Australian farm, they are also covered with gravel. They’re fun to drive in an all-terrain vehicle, but those Pirelli tires of ours aren’t very good on such loose pavement.

It would be better if the surface was a little different and we could use the full width of the track. When chasing an opponent’s car, you’ll want to step aside a bit and cross paths. But here, if you try, you’ll fly right off the track.

I’ve seen others try this maneuver and have accidents because the asphalt didn’t provide enough grip on the inside. That made it difficult to avoid mistakes.”
