Yuki Tsunode will participate in the Japanese Grand Prix for the first time, but he does not expect any special difficulties: according to the AlphaTauri pilot, he drove more than 10 thousand laps around the Suzuka circuit, because he was once trained at a local racing school.
However, he is willing to admit that driving a Formula 1 car will be more difficult than driving the slower cars he has driven on this classic track in the past.
“I drove a Formula 4 car here – I think the last time I drove a Suzuka was four years ago and then I won the race,” Yuki said. – I really like the track, I’ve been racing here since 2016 and have done more than 10 thousand laps, so I know a lot of different tricks. But in the case of a Formula 1 car it is different. And yet I think this is one of the best songs I’ve ever played in my career.
Debut in the home Grand Prix of course great. But I don’t feel any extra pressure – it’s nice to feel the support of the audience, because it gives extra energy.
Although it still doesn’t cross my mind that four years ago I was a spectator too and watched these guys race from the stands with everyone else, and now I have to perform in front of the Japanese audience myself. But my dream was to become a Formula 1 driver, and now my dream is coming true to start Grand Prix in my home to the cheers of my many Japanese fans.
Of course we should make fewer mistakes like the ones I made in Singapore. I also like to avoid fines. Overall, I need to work on all of this, although I’m happy with both the progress made and my pace, especially in qualifying.
