The Miami Grand Prix ended with a confident victory for Max Verstappen – the Red Bull team had an advantage in maximum speed on the straights and Ferrari couldn’t argue with that. In addition, the Dutchman drove flawlessly, so Charles Leclerc didn’t get a chance.
However, Adrian Newey, head of Red Bull Racing’s technical department, is well aware that the speed advantage at some tracks is no guarantee of success at others.
Adrian Newey: “In Miami we saw again how intense the rivalry unfolds in the championship. I remember last season when we had a noticeable advantage in some races, we dominated in Austria and Mexico for example, but in the following stages the picture changed drastically. So at this stage of the season we can’t relax, that’s for sure.
When we talk about the Grand Prix from a technical point of view, the track in Miami is quite difficult and the asphalt is very different from what we are used to, because there were gravel crumbs on it. Tires on such asphalt behave a little differently, and all this had to be studied.
Everyone was also faced with the added challenge that Friday’s practice was interrupted several times by red flags and no one was able to get long series of laps right. That is why the behavior properties of the medium rubber compound became apparent during the race.
And if the Grand Prix developed in such a way that we had to make an early pit stop and switch to hard tyres, it would be very difficult to drive one set of Hard for a full hour to the finish.
