The Singapore Grand Prix turned out to be the worst stage of the season for Mercedes – the team managed just two points. On Thursday, George Russell said at a press conference in Suzuka that his car was the most competitive in terms of sheer speed in the final stage all season, but Mercedes failed to capitalize on this advantage.
George Russell: “I knew starting from the pit lane would not be an easy race for me. Along the way, the team and I made some bold decisions – of course it’s easy to say we overdid it and these decisions turned out to be too risky. However, this happens when you qualify poorly on a circuit of this type.
If we talk about the net speed of the car, it lived up to expectations. After the summer break, we see a clear trend in which type of track the car is economical on and at what speed it misses. All this gives us an idea of the direction we need to move.
It is a pity that the team and I were not able to reach the maximum last weekend. Everyone in the team understands this, but there were also positive moments. At the beginning of the year we had real problems on the urban roads and in Singapore our car was probably the fastest all season.
Hopefully in Suzuka we will be as competitive as last weekend, but it will be a little more difficult. This year the Ferrari car is very fast in medium speed corners, while Red Bull is very fast on the straights. Given that there is only one DRS zone on this track, they will likely be in good shape.
It’s not going to be an easy weekend for us, but on Sunday we’re usually fast, so I don’t see any reason why we can’t drive in Suzuka.”
