On Friday, the riders only worked with wet and intermediate tires and the planned slick tests for 2023 had to be canceled – which are now taking place during the second free practice in Mexico City.
Simone Berra, Pirelli chief engineer: “It’s good that the team was able to work in difficult conditions on Friday and find the transition point between rain and intermediate tyres, because on Sunday wet weather is very possible. In Suzuka, the front tires are the most loaded – they will determine the wear in the race.
The intermediate and wet tires performed well in cold weather with plenty of standing water. The teams had no problems warming up, which was facilitated by the high load on the track, we saw several long series of circles.
Now the teams have to reorganize for a “dry” Saturday. The third practice is especially important – it will be the first experience with the new slicks in Suzuka, the only opportunity to prepare for qualifying – and the time to decide which settings to choose on race day – a wet or dry track.
