Steiner: We were able to compare the two settings

When Kevin Magnussen finished the first working day at the track in Suzuka on the 5th line of the protocol, his partner, Mick Schumacher, did not participate in the second session, as he crashed the car while returning to the pits after completing the first training session.

The damage to the VF-22 was so extensive that the team had to change the chassis and the German rider continues on Saturday.

Kevin Magnussen (5th): “It rained all day and I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to work on the track at all, but it turned out that the conditions were right for the intermediate rubber. Although there was a lot of water on the track at some points, we were able to do a lot of laps.

I’m glad the fans who came to the track today could still see the cars on the track.”

Mick Schumacher (7th in the first session): “It was quite wet on the track, but unfortunately due to aquaplaning the car flipped over and flew off the track. We lost time, so tomorrow we have a lot of work.

But the track is great, the car left a very good impression, so I hope we can count on good results. The weather should be dry tomorrow, so let’s see what we can achieve.”

Gunther Steiner, Team Principal: “Tough day, although the actual track work went well, unfortunately Mick was only able to get through the first session. When he came back from training the starting procedure, he crashed the car quite badly and we didn’t have time to recover it in the second session.

But Kevin completed the test program and we had time to make significant changes to the settings. Because we had an extra 30 minutes in the second session, which was originally planned for tire testing, we were able to compare two different settings.

Tomorrow, in final practice, both cars will be back on track, so work will continue.”
