Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz set second and third times in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix, less than tenth behind pole holder Max Verstappen. Ferrari drivers are determined to fight for the win in the race.
Charles Leclerc (2nd): “It’s hard to get a perfect lap in Suzuka. If you show the best time in the first sector, you will inevitably lose in the third. On the last lap I tried to find a balance and save the tires so that they were effective in the third sector, but lost some time. It’s great that the results are so tight – given my starting position I will try to run a good race.
We gathered very little information before the race, so it just won’t happen, but I’m happy with the car’s behavior. Let’s see what the weather is like tomorrow, because rain is not excluded during the race. The race has to be interesting.”
Carlos Sainz (3rd): “I did a very clean and good lap, with the exception of the last corner, at the exit where there was excessive wheel spin. It’s a shame because I only made way for pole time five hundredths. This is not the first qualifying when I am so little behind Max and Charles. I hope to have a lead of five hundredths by the end of the season and win pole positions.
Tomorrow’s weather may play a part – rain is very possible. A lot can happen in a race, but starting in third place is a huge opportunity for me. I saved the Soft kit – I’m in a great position to challenge Max Verstappen tomorrow.”
