Both Williams drivers dropped out in the early part of qualifying, but when Alex Albon showed a 16th fastest time, Nicholas Latifi was again 20th. In the final leg in Singapore, the Canadian was given a penalty with the loss of five places at the start, but he will not affect his starting position in any way – he is already the last.
Alex Albon (16th): “Too bad, only five hundredths were missing before the start of the second session. Today the car allowed me to achieve more, but before the start of the fast lap I got into traffic and I couldn’t prepare the tires, and in the first sector the car skidded and the tires overheated. In Suzuka, this affects the lap time even more than on any other track.
On a dry surface we showed a good race pace, but let’s see what the weather will be like tomorrow.
Nicholas Latific (20th): “Compared to the morning practice, qualifying went well. Saturday I rode on dry road for the first time in Suzuka, but during practice I could only do two normal laps.
The Japanese track is quite difficult to master as it requires a lot of dedication, complete trust and confidence in the car. It’s a shame I only had a few laps to get used to it, but overall I’m happy with the progress made and the work of the team – we were going in the right direction and in qualifying I missed a few tenths to continue to go.
Our cars are very fast on the Suzuka straights, if we can overtake tomorrow the race could be interesting.”
