Sebastian Vettel qualified ninth on Suzuka, repeating his best result of the season. His partner Lance Stroll did not come from the first part and showed the nineteenth time. Aston Martin hopes for a wet race.
Sebastian Vettel (9th): “Suzuka is much more fun to drive than other tracks! I mean the cars and the speed are just amazing – here you feel alive. I have enjoyed the Japanese circuit for years and today I have another magical day here.
Let’s see what we can do tomorrow, but I’m very happy with today’s result. At the same time, I’m a little disappointed because I rode in qualifying mode the last time on this track.
I don’t mind if it rains tomorrow – I don’t know how to influence the weather, but I think in the rain our chances will be better. Today we had a strong day and we can monitor the condition of the tires in all weather conditions. After such circles, I feel sad that I am leaving Formula 1.”
Lance Walk (19th): “Unfortunately I locked the wheels in the hairpin of Turn 11 and lost three tenths of a second, which was not enough to get out of the first part of qualifying. However, the car drove well – I was happy to drive in Suzuka on dry surfaces.
Starting from 19th is far from ideal, but tomorrow is a new day – let’s see what lies ahead in the race. If the weather turns rainy, like on Friday, then I have the opportunity to regain positions.
