Red Bull is preparing to resume full partnership with Japanese company Honda, but at a new level, as the Milton Keynes team equips Red Bull Powertrains’ engine building division and bench testing of a prototype of its own engine has already begun .
Honda ended its F1 factory program last year, but the Red Bull Racing cars are now powered by powerplants that are still mainly built, assembled and maintained by Japanese mechanics.
In a situation where negotiations with Porsche on a possible future collaboration were unsuccessful and ended, Red Bull is looking for a new partner. Although there have been rumors that it could be the Korean company Hyundai or even the American Ford Motor Company, the option with Honda seems more realistic, especially as Red Bull Racing will win the Constructors’ Championship for the first time this year, also thanks to Japanese engines.
It has already been agreed that prominent Honda logos will reappear on Red Bull and AlphaTauri cars from the Japanese Grand Prix onwards, and this coincides with the resumption of negotiations between the parties over the prospects for a long-term relationship.
“When we were in Tokyo, we had discussions with Honda’s management,” said Helmut Marko, Red Bull motorsport adviser. “Let’s see what happens as we have already built our own engine factory in Milton Keynes.
But in the future, the ratio between the power of combustion engines and electric motors will be at the level of 50/50, so there is a possibility that we will share the tasks.”
