The Japanese Grand Prix ended with a double victory for Red Bull Racing. Max Verstappen guaranteed himself the world title and Sergio Perez returned to second place in the individual classification. Already in the next leg in Austin, the team can win the Constructors’ Championship.
Max Verstappen (1st): “Just insane! The win in Japan is really special – I’m proud that we won the title on this track. When I crossed the finish line I didn’t know I had become champion. There was quite a bit some confusion, which I thought was funny enough.
The first title is always very emotional and the first time is always memorable, and this year’s title feels special because of the way we’ve spent this season. The team put in incredible efforts, constantly attacking, believing and refining the car. We made a few mistakes, but it’s impossible to be perfect all the time, but in most races we were close.
Working with Honda has been incredible – I am grateful to everyone who works on the track, at the base and in the Red Bull Powertrains division. Everyone worked with great motivation and dedication. Sergio is a great partner and now all our efforts are focused on winning the Constructors’ Championship. Let’s see what we can do in Austin.”
Sergio Perez (2nd): “I am very proud of Max’s performance this season – he added. I struggled with him at the beginning of the year but around the middle of the season he shifted into the next gear and in some races he was out of reach.
Today is an important day for the team – it’s unbelievable that we won the title and took the double win in Japan at the home of Honda. I hope we can guarantee victory in the Constructors’ Championship soon. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.
Today I had a great fight with Charles Leclerc. It’s great that we managed to hold on to the race because at one point it looked like this wasn’t going to happen. Just fantastic to attack and fight to the finish. It was difficult to overtake without DRS, but I kept pushing – Charles made a mistake, got a penalty and I moved up to second place.
Christian Horner, team leader: “What a race! Until the finish we weren’t sure if we would get the full points, but such a finish was beyond our dreams. Max really dominated all season, but today he was in his own league, 27 seconds ahead of everyone else at the finish.
This is our 14th record win of the season. This result indicates that the team rises to a new level in each race. We are very proud and grateful for the hard work of Max and everyone in the team at the track and in Milton Keynes. It’s unbelievable that we won the title with Honda in Japan.
Sergio had an incredible race – the season in his performance is just as impressive. He is second in the individual standings and we will all continue to work as hard as possible to keep him in that position.
In addition, we are working to win back the Constructors’ Championship after eight long years. The season is not over yet, there are still many races ahead of us and we are already looking forward to returning to the track in Austin.
