Marco: The news about Max’s title came as a surprise to us

The Japanese Grand Prix was very exciting and anyone following the events at the Suzuka track had many reasons to be concerned. Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s motorsports consultant, lost his voice completely and it was felt that it was difficult for him to speak during an interview on Sky Sports – although perhaps not only because of this, but also because of the emotions that overwhelmed him. it.

Q: Once it was you who brought Max Verstappen to Formula 1 when he was only 17 years old, and today he became a two-time world champion!
Helmut Marko: Even hard to believe! Moreover, we only found out when congratulations to Max, who won his second title, were played over the speakerphone. Our quarterbacks said we missed one point for this, and this was a big surprise, but a very pleasant surprise!

Q: Tell us how this season went for you – you remember the beginning of the championship, when your team lost points, but Max drivers now even better than last year…
Helmut Marko: I emphasize: it steers much better! I remember his words: “I lose 46 points and to win back I need more than thirty races!” Fortunately, it actually cost a lot less. But now that Max is calm and relaxed, he has become a much more mature professional, and this manifested itself, for example, in the early laps of the Budapest or Spa races.

Knowing the capabilities of his car, he let his rivals run ahead of him at first, and once he was on a clear track, he showed his class. This year he made a big step forward, but in the future we will see many more excellent races in his performance.

Q: Do you think he can beat Michael Schumacher’s record for number of titles?
Helmut Marko: I always thought Michael’s record would never be broken, but Lewis Hamilton has already repeated it, he has the same number of titles. But for this to happen, many factors must coincide. Obviously, Max isn’t chasing records. At some point in the future, he may say that he achieved everything he wanted and will end his career.

Q: What can you say about his performance today? After all, Max crossed the finish line 27 seconds ahead of the second-placed driver, and he gained such an advantage, even though the race lasted only about forty minutes…
Helmut Marko: This is the whole Max Verstappen! By the way, he drove again at his own pace and took care of the car. We even considered making another pit stop to get the best lap of the race because we thought it was necessary to win the title. And although we later decided that the risk was too great, all this suggests that Max drove calmly and was confident that he could win the race in this case too.
