After the restart at Suzuka, Charles Leclerc quickly lost speed due to tire wear and eventually lost second position. His Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz was out of contention and his car crashed on the first lap.
Charles Leclerc (3rd): “I gave the fight all my strength, but the race turned out to be difficult. After the restart, we quickly warmed up the tires, but they quickly lost efficiency. At the end of the race I struggled to keep Sergio behind me due to worn front tires.
I congratulate Max and Red Bull on an incredible season, they did a great job and earned the title.
We are using the last four races to improve in everything, to get stronger and next year to give rivals a more serious challenge. We have already taken steps in the right direction in the last two races and will continue this work until the end of the season.
Carlos Sainz (retirement): “I’m disappointed about the exit. Before the start, the choice between medium and wet tires was very close, but with both tires visibility would be zero, which became the main limitation. I tried to get out of the spray behind Perez and ended up in a big puddle. There was aquaplaning and there was nothing I could do to keep the car on track.
At that point, I was just afraid I’d bump into it. My car froze in the middle of the track, I understood that other racers did not see me. Fortunately for everyone, nothing terrible happened today. We will recover and continue the struggle in the US.
Congratulations to Max Verstappen and Red Bull on the title.”
