AlphaTauri really wanted to earn points on the track, home of Yuki Tsunoda and of the Japanese company Honda, which supplies the team from Faenza with power plants, but it didn’t work out.
In addition, already after the finish, Pierre Gasly was fined for speeding in a situation where the race was stopped by red flags and 20 seconds were added to his result, after which he moved to the last line of the protocol.
Yuki Tsunoda (13th): “Hard day. Of course I wanted to finish in the top ten and it’s a shame that I didn’t succeed today. Although I think I tried my best and squeezed everything out of the car, but we didn’t have enough pace.
Still, the whole weekend was very interesting and the first experience of driving a Formula 1 car on my home track gave me a lot of pleasure. I want to thank all the fans who came to Suzuka to support me and our team, especially in such rainy weather.
I also congratulate Max Verstappen on winning the World Cup – it’s great that the Japanese fans saw this today!”
Pierre Gasly (17th): “Today we wanted to behave differently from the rivals, but it is very difficult to overtake on this track. We did everything we could, but the tactics we chose didn’t work. It’s a shame because it’s a special weekend for AlphaTauri and for Honda – but it’s still great that Max has won the championship.
He performed incredibly well, winning races regularly and always achieving the best possible results. He has all the championship qualities needed, so congratulations to him, Red Bull and Honda. To win the title here at Suzuka is a special achievement and I am very happy for their entire team.”
