Thanks to Esteban Ocon’s fourth place and Fernando Alonso’s seventh place at the Japanese Grand Prix, Alpine achieved its best result of the season, with 18 points. The team regained fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship for McLaren.
Esteban Ocon (4th): “Fourth place is a fantastic result for us, especially in such conditions. The start in the rain in poor visibility was difficult, so I was fully focused not to make a mistake in the first few meters.
I’m glad we managed to hold the race and please the fans who supported us all weekend. Fighting Lewis Hamilton is always a pleasure – I had to look in the rear-view mirrors all the time.
Congratulations Max on winning the championship. He earned the title by dominating every race. We leave Japan with a lot of points and are back in fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship.”
Fernando Alonso (7th): “The race was fun, but chaotic. I’m glad we satisfied the fans of the show. The team deserved a lot of points, but more could have happened.
It was difficult to control the race because of the rain, the safety car and the red flags. There have been several incidents that need to be investigated to improve in the future.
Congratulations to Max Verstappen on winning the championship. Overall a well deserved result, but I hope the battle will be tighter next year!”
Otmar Safnauer, Team Principal: “Not the easiest race as the changing conditions meant that everyone had to make difficult decisions. First of all, it’s great that we had a race and satisfied the Japanese fans, who provided great support all weekend. At one point, it looked like the race would not resume due to rain and poor visibility.
The team can be happy with the points earned – Esteban achieved a fantastic result, finishing fourth, and Fernando seventh. We were fast in every session all weekend, so thanks to some well-deserved points, we returned to fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.
The team spent two intense weeks in Singapore and Japan, but the work continues as we await the double stages in Austin and Mexico City.
Congratulations to Max Verstappen on winning the championship. He had a great season – he was a joy to watch.”
