Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto is surprised that it took the stewards of the Japanese grand prix just minutes to punish Charles Leclerc for cutting the chicane on the last lap and adding five seconds to his result. Binotto cited the situation after the finish of the Singapore Grand Prix as an example, when it took the stewards several hours to determine whether the race winner, Sergio Perez, was breaking the rules or not.
“Seven days ago in Singapore, it took the stewards many laps during the race and hours after the finish to make a simple decision,” Racingnews365 quoted Mattia Binotto as saying. It took them a few seconds today. I am surprised by such a different approach in Singapore and a few days later in Japan.
Is it the right decision to punish Charles for five seconds? In our opinion, he got no advantage. He was ahead and stayed ahead by the same margin. The decision is controversial, but it has already been made and we accept it.
In Singapore, a five-second penalty should have been given straight away, so we had a chance to act differently in the race and fight for a possible win. That’s what’s disappointing.”
