McLaren is dissatisfied with the Japanese weekend’s results as they believe ineffective tactics have missed the opportunity to score points with two cars.
Lando Norris (10th): “First of all, I’m happy that today’s race took place. All weekend we felt incredible support from the Japanese fans, and even though it was raining they waited patiently – overall I’m glad we were still able to put on a show for them.
Of course we always want to race, but the Grand Prix was not easy for us. Unfortunately I lost a lot of positions at the first start, but the pit stop allowed me to bounce back and it’s good that we were able to earn at least one point.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Max on his second title!”
Daniel Riccardo (11th): “It’s great that we were able to race, although the chance seemed small. In the end I enjoyed it because I am a racer and the opportunity to fight on the track always makes me happy. But I’m even more happy for the fans who had to sit in the stands in such bad weather.
The results of the Grand Prix depended on when the switch to intermediate rubber was made, but the choice was not easy. The situation was not standard, because we usually wait until the conditions are right, and then we make a pit stop. But today many factors had to be taken into account.
I think the winners were the ones who switched to intermediate tires early on, like Sebastian Vettel. We lost mainly through tactics. Furthermore, I think we showed a good pace, although we had to save the rubber.
Of course we need to catch up on some aspects of the work, but I’m just really happy that the fans got to see an interesting race. And congratulations to Max on his well-deserved win in the World Championship.”
Andreas Seidli (sports director): “We are disappointed with Sunday’s results. Talking about Daniel’s race, although he won a few positions back on the first start, we acted too conservatively after the restart, stayed on track too long, that’s why we turned back, outside the top ten.
In Lando’s case, unfortunately, we lost some positions at the first start, which we regained thanks to the pit stop in time after the restart.
Overall, we weren’t as competitive as we’d like. The remaining time before the Austin stage will be spent understanding, which will allow us to add.
