Jos Verstappen: We didn’t uncork the champagne right away…

Jos Verstappen, the father of the now two-time world champion Max Verstappen, was in Singapore because he hoped that his son would secure the title there earlier than planned, but that was not achieved then.

Yos didn’t fly to Japan, returned to Europe and followed the events in Suzuka from home, but that didn’t stop him from celebrating another important success of his son at home, he says.

“Of course I was in constant contact with both the Red Bull Racing team and Raymond Vermuhlen, Max’s manager,” said Verstappen Sr. in an interview with Viaplay. – Finally there is certainty – the title is won.

Last season, the pressure reached an incredible level, but when it was all over, we experienced incredibly strong emotions. This year is different. We understood that the title would be secured sooner or later, but we didn’t know exactly when this would happen.

I think the son had a great Japanese Grand Prix. In the end, he broke away from everyone for nearly half a minute. Races like this are Max’s strong point, as already as a child, while karting, he developed special piloting skills in difficult conditions.

I usually come to most races, but this year I’ve traveled quite a bit and going to Japan isn’t that easy. But you can also celebrate the championship victory at home. Admittedly, we didn’t uncork the champagne right away, because after the finish there was some ambiguity about which factor influences the score.

And then I called Max and said he was the best. But he confirmed that a long time ago, and at least I tell him this almost every weekend.
