Charles Leclerc’s race for the 2022 title is over on Suzuka. After the race he spoke about his feelings…
Q: Charles, how did you react to the five second penalty after the finish?
Charles Leclerc: I have nothing to say. I made a mistake and somehow wanted to minimize the losses. I didn’t realize it was the last lap, but a five second penalty is a common decision in such situations.
Q: At the restart you had a good pace, but after that you fell further and further behind…
Charles Leclerc: Yes, for four or five laps we were very fast, but the race was much longer. Then I just tried to make it to the finish. The front tires lost efficiency, Sergio pressed heavily from behind, it became increasingly difficult to control him. At the end of the race I made a mistake – we had a really hard time.
Q: In the beginning you fought side by side with Max in the first corner…
Charles Leclerc: Yes it was fun. We drove very close. It didn’t take long, but it was great.
Q: What can you say about Max and his championship title?
Charles Leclerc: Sincere congratulations to Max and Red Bull. They have done a great job this year. Max was incredible and fully deserved this success.
In the four remaining races, we want to gather as much information as possible, which will help us improve next season, make us stronger – and impose a tighter battle on our rivals.
Q: At one point a tractor appeared on the track…
Charles Leclerc: In principle this should not be allowed. We remember what happened in 2014 and now we have to draw conclusions. If you go first in these conditions, you can still see something, but if you’re behind other cars, you can’t see anything. When you’re driving on the highway at high speed and at least try to see something, a stationary tractor standing on it can lead to serious tragedy.
Q: What do you think can be done in a situation where it is raining and the fans want to see the race?
Charles Leclerc: Now the biggest problem is poor visibility. If we do something to reduce the amount of spray behind the car, it will help a lot. It is common for the track condition to allow the race, but with near zero visibility it is very dangerous. We need to find a solution to reduce the water plume behind the cars.
