Mario Andretti: There is nothing better than repeating success

Mario Andretti won the Formula 1 title in 1978, but became the IndyCar series champion in the United States four times, most recently in 1984, when he was already 44 years old. Yesterday, the motorsport veteran was invited to participate in one of Sky Sports’ programs and he very much appreciated the performance of Max Verstappen, who secured his second title in Suzuka ahead of schedule.

“There is nothing better for a driver than repeating success and winning the championship again, especially after the controversial 2021 season finale,” Andretti said. – Max Verstappen deserves a second title, and without any reservations. Completed 18 races so far, but he dominated throughout the season and will continue to do so until the end of the championship. We can say that this season was simply exemplary.

This year, Max proved that he has become a mature, versatile professional. He shows great speed in qualifying, but he also has a very competent approach to racing. He is constantly improving his skills with the help of the Red Bull Racing team, who almost never make mistakes.

In any case, this season is magnificent. From my point of view, George Russell was the discovery of the year. I am impressed by his speed in qualifying, but especially how thoughtful he is during the Grand Prix. We must not forget that in the Mercedes team he has to compete with Lewis Hamilton, the most successful driver in Formula 1. This is a very difficult task, but Russell manages to tackle it successfully despite his youthful age.
