On the third lap of the Japanese Grand Prix, when he was overtaking the pack after visiting the pits, Pierre Gasly suddenly saw a tractor standing motionless on the track, which had come to evacuate Carlos Sainz’s car. And it happened on the track where, eight years ago, Jules Bianchi suffered a serious head injury after crashing into a tractor that was evacuating another car.
Following the incident, the FIA issued a brief statement: “As for the incident on lap three, it happened after the safety car had departed and the race was neutralized. Conditions deteriorated and the red flag was shown before the #10 driver passed the crash site that damaged his car on the final lap.”
‘What’s that tractor on the track? I rode next to him. This is unacceptable. Remember what happened. I can’t believe it,” Gasly told the engineer.
Alex Wurz, director of the GPDA Drivers’ Union, said: “I think we need to talk about putting a tractor on the track. This should not have happened.”
The tractor-run incident will be investigated after the race.
