McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl hopes the difficult conditions will help Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo move forward as the car’s speed allows it and yesterday’s qualifying results do not reflect the MCL36’s capabilities.
Andreas Seidl: “The race will be rainy which, as always, involves different scenarios, but we are determined to run it in a combat fashion and hope that both cars will finish in the top ten.
Qualifying was not the most successful way as Daniel started very confidently but then unfortunately only missed three thousandths to reach the final session. And Lando was prevented by Max Verstappen before the last attempt, and that affected the result. I think we lost from two to three tenths then – otherwise Norris would start two or three positions higher.
The rain is not too heavy yet and this ensures a normal start, but we expect the entire race to be run on a wet track. In this situation it is very interesting how the rubber will work, because on Friday we saw that the intermediate tires wear out very quickly.
Overall, the race promises to be interesting, and we will see a variety of tactical schemes, a different number of pit stops and so on.
