After the Suzuka race, everyone started talking again about the lack of performance of Pirelli rain tires – when given the choice, riders always prefer intermediate tires, which increases the level of risk.
Sebastian Vettel said after the race: “We are forced to run on intermediate tires because wet tires are rubbish, sorry, they are not very good. This is how we move ourselves from one emergency to another. At the start of the race, the whole peloton was on tires that were not suitable for the conditions.”
Pirelli responded to criticism with the traditional phrase about insufficient test time…
Mario Isola, Head of Pirelli Racing: “We only have one wet compound and one intermediate compound. And they have to work on 22 different tracks. That’s why we tried to find the best compromise when creating it.
To be honest, we don’t have many opportunities to test rain and intermediate tires. We work with the FIA and the teams, but if you can’t test tyres, you can’t develop them.
In the pre-season testing in Barcelona, we deliberately wet the track for half a day, but when there was a lot of water on the track, the teams almost didn’t leave and concentrated on working with intermediate rubber.
