Mercedes brings latest updates to Austin

For the upcoming US Grand Prix in Austin, the Mercedes team will bring the latest updates of the season to the Car of the Season. The team’s lead race engineer, Andrew Shovlin, said the novelties should not only increase aerodynamic efficiency, but also reduce the weight of the car.

Andrew Shovlin: “We will bring the latest aerodynamic updates to Austin. Hopefully they’ll provide a small speed boost, but more importantly, we’re getting more and more information that we can use next year. In addition, new items allow you to slightly reduce the weight of the car, bringing it closer to the minimum limit.

It is difficult to predict which positions we can count on. In Singapore Lewis was close to pole and in Suzuka both cars lost a lot of the leaders. Our race pace is quite high, but if we take a step forward, hopefully we can compete with Ferrari and Red Bull. But predicting our pace in qualifying is quite difficult. As I said, we are learning a lot and will try to do our best in the last four races.”

About the lack of speed during the Suzuka race, which prevented Lewis Hamilton from overtaking Esteban Okon, Shovlin explained by setting the car for too much downforce: “Because DRS couldn’t be used, it was very difficult to get in. to fetch.

Maybe it would be right to set the car for less downforce, but there is a fundamental factor that we need to improve on next year – to provide more downforce while reducing drag on the straights. This allows us to tune the car for a higher top speed while remaining competitive in corners.”
