Daniel Ricciardo’s contract with McLaren expired at the end of 2023, but in the summer Woking decided to end the partnership ahead of schedule and invited his young compatriot Oscar Piastri to replace Daniel. British team head Zach Brown called the decision to end the partnership with Ricciardo one of the most difficult of his career.
“We have decided to end the partnership because we have not achieved the desired results in a year and a half,” Zach Brown told Australian television channel Fox Sports. “We tried our best, we love Daniel and we still enjoy working with him, but in business the results are important, which we never got, although we tried everything.
We don’t know why it didn’t work, but it wasn’t anyone’s fault. The team did everything they could, Daniel did everything he could. We just don’t have any other options to do. Sometimes athletes just don’t succeed and need a different environment.
I tried to get Daniel to McLaren before he moved to Renault. I am a big fan of Daniel and it took me years to bring him to McLaren. I remain a fan of Daniel’s talent – nothing has changed in this regard.
I asked him if he wanted to drive for McLaren in IndyCar or Formula E. I wanted Daniel to stay in our family, but he is completely focused on Formula 1, which is understandable because this is the pinnacle of motorsport.
The decision to stop with him was probably the hardest of my racing career. There was nothing fun about it, but it’s my job and Andreas Seidl’s job to make tough decisions. We saw no progress and took this step in the interest of the team and Daniel, but the decision was a huge disappointment.”
