As part of various promotions and anniversaries, 1978 World Champion Mario Andretti has repeatedly sat behind the wheel of Formula 1 and Indycar race cars of yesteryear, but this week he will be able to test a modern McLaren car with a turbo hybrid engine for the first time.
McLaren Racing boss Zack Brown made a promise to Andretti at Goodwood a few years ago. They were supposed to be held as part of the US Grand Prix weekend in Austin, but it was decided to arrange everything a week early to allow for some quiet time to work and shoot a video.
McLaren does not say what kind of car it will be, but one that has raced after 2014.
Mario Andretti: “A few years ago at Goodwood I told Zach that I wanted to try a modern McLaren car. And Zach promised to arrange such tests. We jokingly remembered this promise every time we saw each other, and then in Miami, in front of Martin Brundle, he said it again—this time in front of the whole world. I had to do it!
Zach arranged these tests next weekend. I do a few laps. He said it would be a turbo-era hybrid car released after 2014. I want to feel the power of a hybrid drive system, understand what it’s like. I will be able to attack, but I have to be careful because I have to return the car intact.”
