The McLaren team returned from Japan to base in Woking and there was a race team meeting with all staff dedicated to the results of a not very successful weekend in Suzuka.
In the Japanese stage of the season, only Lando Norris managed to earn at least something, as he rounded out the top ten, while Daniel Ricciardo finished 11th. And if McLaren was 4 points ahead of Alpine in the Constructors’ Championship after the Singapore Grand Prix, it has now dropped again to fifth place and is 13 points behind the works Renault team.
During a meeting with the team, Lando assured Norris that the team will keep fighting until the end of the season and will do everything they can to beat Alpine.
Lando Norris: “I think our mission is clear: fight against Alpine. Although we have to admit that they are ahead of us in terms of pace – and yet we can still compete with them. Overall their car is faster than ours this season, but we continue to compete with them and after Singapore we were ahead of them.
I think we look better all season in terms of reliability and tactics choice, and if we continue on the same footing until the end of the season, we still have a chance. Therefore, our plan is not to slow down, to fight to the end, and then we’ll see how everything goes. And I look forward to continuing this work.”
