The longest season in history is scheduled for 2023 with 24 stages on the calendar. The head of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, thinks this number of Grand Prix is optimal, but assures that there are many more people who want to take the race.
Stefano Domenicali: “From 23 to 24 Grand Prix is a nice number, I don’t want to talk about a further increase in the number of stages. When choosing venues for the races we consider many factors, but we have decided very clearly how much Grand Prix – 24 – is our maximum.
In recent years, the calendar consisted of 15 races, but then the situation was different. Now there is a huge interest in Formula 1 and I hope it will continue to grow. 24 races strike a balance between quantity and quality. If running that many milestones were a problem, I’d shorten the calendar right away.
We try to find a balance. A third of the races take place in Europe, the second third in the Americas and the Middle East and another third in the Far East. When compiling a calendar, the financial side is very important. There are many more offers than there are dates on the calendar. When choosing, we take into account the beauty of the track itself, investment in the project, events for fans, the interest of teams and manufacturers.”
