Nearly a year has passed since the dramatic events of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton on the final lap to win the title. On the TV channel Sky Italia, the Mercedes driver said that he does not hold a grudge against Max, but that the events of that evening still hurt him.
Lewis Hamilton: “Everyone experiences pain after a traumatic experience. It does not matter whether it is the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship – such events cause trauma. My biggest passion is racing next to my family, so losing in Abu Dhabi was very painful.
Max did what he had to do on the last lap, so I have no problems with him. In his place I would have done the exact same thing. There wasn’t the same level of respect between us off the track as on the track. The respect wasn’t always mutual – maybe it’s because of age, but with time it will pass.
Max is doing great this season. There is no doubt that he has the fastest car at his disposal and he is doing a great job. Hopefully at some point we will be able to compete again.”
