Jos Verstappen believes Daniel Ricciardo has a special place among his son’s teammates, as Max has learned a lot from the Australian during his many years of collaboration at Red Bull Racing.
They worked together from 2016 to 2018, it was during this period that Verstappen started winning in Formula 1, although they then split up. After Ricciardo retired from Red Bull Racing, he won just one race, while Max became a two-time world champion.
When Verstappen Sr. When asked who could be considered Max’s best team-mate, he replied: “It’s hard to say, but probably Ricciardo is the driver he learned the most from. Daniel was a great colleague, they got along well. Max was still a very young guy at the time and Riccardo performed great in qualifying.
I think the Red Bull car was a good fit for him at the time, but now Daniel is having problems precisely because the McLaren car was not a good fit for him. Some things don’t suit him…
At a young age, it is easier for a person to adapt to everything. You know, there’s an old rule: you can’t replant an old tree. There are older generation riders – including myself in this category – who have developed a certain steering style and it is already difficult to change it.
According to Daniel, he will not participate in Formula 1 next year, but hopes to return to the championship in 2024.
