Gene Haas: Mick Schumacher cost us a fortune

Gene Haas, an American businessman who owns Haas F1, is ready to admit that Mick Schumacher is a promising driver, but he often gets into accidents and crashes cars, costing the team too much.

The son of a seven-time world champion wants to stay in Formula 1, but there are growing rumors that Nico Hulkenberg could become Kevin Magnussen’s partner next year. By the way, Aston Martin’s reserve pilot does not hide that he has already started training more intensively – in case there is an opportunity to return to the wheel of a racing car.

Gene Haas told the press during the NASCAR Series in Las Vegas: “When you’re dealing with a rookie in Formula 1, it just costs you too much. Mistakes in driver selection, tactical miscalculations or the wrong tires can cost you millions of dollars.

I think Mick is a promising rider, but he cost us a fortune. He crashed a lot of cars and it cost us a lot of money that we just don’t have. If your driver is Max Verstappen, and he earns some points, although he sometimes has accidents, it can still be tolerated. But if you’re already in the tail, but hit cars at the same time, then you’re going to have a really hard time.

Mick’s future depends on himself. We are adopting a wait-and-see attitude. We need Mick to earn points and we try to give him as much time as possible to see what he can do. If he wants to stay in our team, he has to show that he can still earn some points. This is exactly what we are waiting for.”

When Haas was asked if he would give Mick time until the end of the season, the team owner replied: “Let’s just say, if he wins the next race, he’s guaranteed a place on the team. Everything else is not quite clear yet.”

The US team hopes they can earn some points at the US Grand Prix in Austin, which they haven’t been able to do for seven races in a row.
