This year, Nick de Vries worked as a reserve driver for Mercedes, had his first practice on Friday in France, in Lewis Hamilton’s car, and will drive in Mexico City, replacing George Russell.
The Dutchman will drive for AlphaTauri next year, but Mercedes is not afraid that De Vries will pass on some of their secrets to Red Bull…
Mike Elliott, technical director of Mercedes: “We are very pleased that Nick has been given the opportunity to continue his career in Formula 1 as a lead driver. We are sorry that he is leaving for another team, but such is the situation. Nick is a good driver, he deserved this opportunity.
When de Vries is in the pits, he is a great help to the team. He is a great guy, very attentive to detail and knows the car well. We trust him, we believe he will go through another Friday practice with us, not paying attention to what we want him not to pay attention to. I’m sure he will do well.
Formula 1 is changing fast. What he learned a year ago won’t exactly be useful to his opponents now. He competed in Formula E, which took most of his time. He can tell them as much as possible how we work, how our departments interact with each other, which processes and systems we use.
We all wish him every success. He was always honest with us, and we with him. I don’t think there’s a problem here.”
