Mario Isola: In Austin, you have to be prepared for anything!

In the US Pirelli will bring medium hard compounds: C2, C3 and C4 will be used as Hard, Medium and Soft. But the Italian tire industry has a bigger agenda than a typical race weekend, as championship teams test prototype tires for 2023 in Austin.

Mario Isolahead of racing programs at Pirelli: “At the Circuit of the Americas we will test a number of prototype slicks before 2023.

The American circuit has a balanced configuration in terms of the loads that tires and cars experience during acceleration, braking and also cornering. But the track is quite smooth and the riders like it, although it has some special sections that should not be underestimated.

In 2020 the asphalt was partially redone and last year some of the most unpleasant bumps were smoothed out, forcing the teams to increase the ground clearance of the cars, which affected the aerodynamics.

During the first practice sessions, the track surface condition can change quickly, so in the third practice the teams will have to work as efficiently as possible to determine the tactics.

The second Friday session will be devoted to slick testing, which is expected to be used in 2023, weather permitting. In the past, the weather conditions in Austin have been very different – in general this is a track where you have to be prepared for anything!
