The Haas riders have not earned points in seven races in a row, but Mick Schumacher is optimistic about the upcoming US Grand Prix. The young German appreciates his chances of finishing in the top 10 in Austin as he is confident track conditions are right for the VF-22.
Q: It’s no secret that you are a big fan of the USA and went to Austin right after the Japanese Grand Prix. What have you been doing all this time?
Mick SchumacherA: Actually, I went to Dallas. I love coming to the US for many reasons. Having your own ranch in the country is a great advantage. I raced Can-Am cars, had fun, turned off my phone for a while and spent time with my sister and horses. I’m looking forward to the race – I’m delighted.
Q: Unlike last year, you come to Austin this season with points earned and fighting for seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship. Does it give you confidence?
Mick Schumacher: This season is fundamentally different from last year. In 2021 I was a debutant, so it took me a lot of time to learn all the procedures and to feel comfortable in the car. Last year we knew we wouldn’t be able to compete for the points, but throughout the season the team showed professionalism and never gave up.
This year is different because we are on the rise. Every Haas employee went above and beyond to get us back to these positions, and I’m honored to represent the team on the Austin podium.
Q: What are your goals for the coming weekend?
Mick Schumacher: We think the COTA track should match our car. We know we haven’t had much luck in races lately or it’s been a tough weekend, but the team hopes to make a difference in the home race while we prepare something. I hope this will bring good luck and that we will earn points on the podium in the US.
Q: This year the stage in Miami has already passed, next year another American stage will appear on the Formula 1 calendar – in Las Vegas. What do you think each of these circuits will bring to Formula 1?
Mick Schumacher: The COTA track has been a part of Formula 1 for a long time. It’s great that Miami and Las Vegas will be added next year. Looking forward to the race in Vegas – I’ve never been to this city before. It’s interesting to see Elvis as a priest and casino – I’m very happy with this!
