1996 World Champion Damon Hill expressed disappointment that Ferrari had not been able to force a full battle for the Red Bull Racing title. Hill cited not only the mistakes of the Scuderia as the reason for this, but also the phenomenal form of Max Verstappen.
Damon Hill: “In my opinion it is difficult to judge what has led to such results this season – Red Bull and Max acted almost flawlessly or Ferrari shot themselves in the foot.
At the start of the season, the Scuderia showed promise, but sometimes it was impossible to watch their performances without tears. Due to wrong strategies and mistakes by the driver, they were unable to challenge Max Verstappen.
On the other hand, Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc share only one point in the individual standings, and if you take Max out of the equation, we can say that Ferrari and Red Bull are equal. In Japan, however, Max broke for twenty laps on a wet track with twenty seconds from Charles and Sergio.
He was driving a second faster than a Ferrari and Charles’ car tires were worn out. This proves that their settings don’t fit the tires, which is why they didn’t challenge Red Bull.
Max’s confidence is on the rise this season. He performed brilliantly all year and didn’t come across as nervous.”
