Magnussen: We feel extra pressure in Austin

The US Grand Prix is Haas’ home round. Team rider Kevin Magnussen hopes to earn points on the track in Austin.

Q: In 2014 you performed in Austin for the first time. Has your relationship with the track changed in any way over the years?
Kevin Magnussen: I don’t think my approach to the track has changed over the years. COTA is a great track that has gotten more and more bumpy over the years. At some point the bumps have been removed so thanks to this factor the nature of the racing ring has changed a bit.

As I said the track is great especially the first sector is very fast and its esques are some of the best corners in Formula 1. The relegation zones are too wide in my opinion but the race track itself is great so I am looking forward to.back.

Q: As they say, everything is big in Texas, and the first corner of the COTA circuit confirms this. How do you manage to overtake and then not lose position in a combination of the third-sixth turns?
Kevin MagnussenA: It’s quite a unique twist. It expands to the top and due to the fact that it rises, the boundaries of the route are not visible. However, the apex itself is quite narrow, but the width of the bend makes it possible to drive along different stretches.

There are many overtaking opportunities in the first corner, especially as it follows the DRS zone. In a bend it is easy to lock the wheels when braking because braking is quite serious and you have to start it in lift.

After the first corner there is a descent to the “esks”, in which it is quite difficult to follow the opponent closely. Once you have regained the position in the first corner, it is enough to keep it in fast corners.

Q: The US Grand Prix is the home round for Haas. Over the years of gigs, have we noticed an increase in interest in Formula 1 in the US?
Kevin MagnussenA: I’m glad to be back in Austin. Now our team has several home races, but this stage is special. This track has a hill for Haas fans and in Austin we feel extra pressure. I want to show a good result in the home race.

Q: This year the stage in Miami has already passed, next year another American stage will appear on the Formula 1 calendar – in Las Vegas. What do you think each of these circuits will bring to Formula 1?
Kevin Magnussen: I think the COTA track was special from the first race because of the large number of spectators in the stands. I don’t know if all tickets for the first race have been sold, but last year it became clear how much interest in Formula 1 in the US has grown.

The track has an American motorsport feel, with fans arriving in RVs and large SUVs like IMSA, IndyCar and more. At the same time, new Formula 1 fans will arrive on Sunday, which is cool.

In Miami we saw a lot of new spectators, people who had never seen Formula 1 on TV before. I expect the same picture in Las Vegas. Now it’s part of Formula 1 too – the Netflix series has boosted the popularity of the sport, which is great.
