De Vries: Marco appreciated that I personally negotiated with him

Nick de Vries’ brilliant performance at the Italian Grand Prix helped secure AlphaTauri for next season. The Dutch rider said he personally negotiated with Helmut Marko, who won Austrian consultant Red Bull.

Nick de Vries: “After Monza, my phone didn’t stop. I wanted to take advantage of the situation and the resulting hype to find a place for myself in Formula 1 next season.

By then we had been talking to Williams for a long time and Tuesday after the Monza race I spoke to Jost Capito. In addition, I had already planned tests with Alpine – we agreed before Monza. I came to the Alpine base for the race in Spa in August.

After Monza on Monday evening we had dinner with Max Verstappen in Monaco. We openly discussed my chances and options. We talked about AlphaTauri, Helmut Marko and a few days later I arrived in Graz.

We had a great time at Helmut’s. For two days we tasted the local Austrian cuisine and discussed our future together. Helmut even has a great sense of humor and we have mutual respect. I think he appreciated that I personally came to him and negotiated directly. At Red Bull everything is focused on results and wins – I share this approach.

Of course, not everything depended on me, because the contractual situation, as you understand, was somewhat confusing. But after that trip to Graz I realized that I have a good chance to start in 2023.”
