After finishing the Japanese Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso said the result could be higher than seventh. In Austin, the Alpine pilot explained why he sees the last stage as a race of missed opportunities.
Fernando Alonso: “During the race in Japan, my microphone didn’t work. This shouldn’t have been a problem as the team and I discussed all possible strategy options before the start. However, during the race we didn’t stick to what we discussed and lost some positions as a result.
In that race at least it was difficult to make the right decisions. In such situations, luck is always needed because if you pit too early, in the event of red flags, you will be the last to restart. You never know how events will develop in such races, but I hope we will do better in Austin.”
Speaking of the battle for fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship with McLaren, Fernando said: “We were faster than McLaren all season. Lando Norris talks about this all the time and I agree with him. However, we didn’t finish all the races and lost a lot of points as a result.
If we don’t have any reliability issues in the remaining four races, we’ll end the season for them. I expect they will continue to fight until Abu Dhabi.
I still have four races to go in Alpine, but this will not affect my relationship with the team. Everyone is extremely open and honest – I think this will continue to the end. I don’t expect any problems.”
