At a press conference Thursday in Austin, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz spoke about Daniel Ricciardo’s departure and the challenges ahead for the remaining races…
Carlos Sainz: “In Formula 1, everyone only remembers your last race. People quickly forget what happened before. Everyone only talks about Daniel’s problems, but not about how he won the first race for McLaren in nine years at Monza.
I’ve always done well in Austin, but I’ve never been on the podium. This year we have a faster car, we have battled for pole position on almost all tracks, but in races we were often inferior in speed to Red Bull Racing.
The last four race weekends of this year will be all about testing and experimentation in preparation for next season, including working with tires to perform better in 2023. In the second session on Friday we will test 2023 tires here – this is a very important workout.
Fighting George Russell for fourth place in the individual competition? You know, whether I’m fourth or fifth, it won’t change my life. It’s more important to me to win another race than to finish fourth at the end of the season.”
