Formula E: Team McLaren to debut in season 9

The McLaren team will debut in the EV World Championship in the 2022-2023 season, which is Formula E’s ninth season, and the electric series moves into the third generation (Gen3) cars.

For example, Formula E will be added to the whole range of categories in which McLaren Racing competes – and this is Formula 1, IndyCar, Extreme and virtual races.

The decision to place their team in this series was made after McLaren reserved in January 2021 for their future team the opportunity to participate in the championship from the ninth season, and during this period they have expanded the prospects for such a project rated . The decision to enter Formula E not only reflects McLaren Racing’s commitment to electric racing series, but will also expand the company’s environmentally conscious program and reach new audiences.

The McLaren team is being built through the acquisition of the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, which should happen this year. Ian James will remain at the head of the team, which will ensure a normal transition to new owners after the end of the current season.

Further details on McLaren’s Formula E program, including roster, power source supplier and commercial partners, will be announced at a later date.

Zach Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing: “We always strive to compete with the best and be at the forefront of technology, giving our fans and partners new reasons for joy and inspiration, as well as entertaining them. Formula E, like other racing series in which we participate, fully meets these criteria.

Like all these types of motorsport, Formula E is primarily about racing, but it has aspects such as strategy, technical and commercial components. We are also delighted that McLaren Racing will be home to a first-class team built by Mercedes. While it will operate separately from our Formula 1 and IndyCar teams, it will complement our electric program which already has a team in the Extreme E off-road series.”
