Everyone understood that in Austin, the car build-up problems could be the biggest during the season, and while Mercedes has worked hard to reduce this phenomenon, Lewis Hamilton spoke very emotionally about his feelings on Friday…
Lewis Hamilton (8th): “I remember being happy with the track behind the wheel of last year’s car – powerful and fast, but now everything is different. We lost some power from the switch to biofuel, and the car got a lot stiffer, and now… Luckily I don’t have many fillings or they would all fall out. I hope that next season our car will not be so sensitive to the unevenness of the track.
In general, everything went according to plan. We tested the novelties quite well – I really felt the progress. In the second practice we did not work with the settings according to the rules of tire testing, but the first went well. We will make some adjustments and see where we end up on Saturday. I don’t feel like we’re very far behind.”
George Russell (13th): “Through the tire tests, the second session turned out to be unusual, but it made it possible to understand what kind of rubber we will be dealing with next year.
The novelties we put on the car this weekend proved to be very effective. The first practice was strange – some cars suddenly joined, others, from which we expected more speed, rolled backwards. We have no idea what the balance of power will be, but the car is quite competitive, which gives hope.”
