Formula E: Edoardo Mortara wins race in Berlin

A double Formula E race will take place this weekend in the German capital: the seventh and eighth races of the season will be held on the track, built along the airfield of the old Berlin Templehof airport.

The length of the circle is about 2.5 km, it consists of 17 turns, overtaking is possible here, but the concrete surface is very abrasive, which affects the tire wear. By the time the race started, the surface temperature reached 24 degrees with an air temperature of about 20 degrees.

Edoardo Mortara started confidently from pole position and held the lead, but Jean-Eric Vergne, who started the race in fourth position, ran straight to the attack, ahead of António Felix da Costa, who started third and went into the first corner. he almost moved to second position, but Alex Sims managed to keep it.

However, after a few laps, French racer DS Teecheetah made a mistake and let several rivals go ahead at once, and he rolled back to 6th position. And the second was already driven by his partner, António Felix da Costa, who very effectively resolved the situation on track.

Porsche racer Andre Lotterer managed to get ahead of Sims and take third place, the Briton tried to counterattack, but in vain.

On lap six, Vergne, angry with himself, was ahead of Alex, who was aiming to return to the top three after his own mistake – the Frenchman was already fourth.

After the first ten laps, Mortara remained in the lead, although his lead was only 0.8 seconds, and Costa was second, Lotterer was chasing him and Vergne tried to put pressure on him.

Pascal Wehrlein, Lotterer’s partner, was the first to activate attack mode in hopes of getting ahead of a few opponents and instantly regained one position, pushing Sims to 6th position. Lotterer, who finished fourth, also activated Attack Mode, but to do that he had to get off the track, so he had a few cars pull up to him.

Wehrlein made active use of the high power mode and quickly moved up to second position. He was followed by Sims, but the Brit was chased by three riders who activated attack mode later than him, so the top five order kept changing.

On lap 17 Lotterer moved into second position and Vergne attacked Wehrlein very hard and passed him. Da Costa followed suit, with the DS Teecheetah and Porsche making contact and flying small pieces of carbon fiber in different directions.

On lap 19, Mortara was the last driver in the top ten not to have used attack mode, and when it was his turn he lost first position to Lotterer, but not for long: the powerplant’s increased power made it easily recoup him and return to the leaders.

With 22 laps behind us, the top ten looked like this: Mortara – Lotterer – Sims – da Costa – Vergne – Stoffel Vandorn – Wehrlein – Mitch Evans – Oliver Rowland – Sam Bird.

In the next round, Vergne again took advantage of the attack mode and returned to 3rd position. Meanwhile, Mercedes driver Vandorn overtook a few rivals and moved up to 4th position but didn’t rest on this and soon outperformed Vergne beautifully. Then Jean-Eric was even ahead of da Costa.

On lap 30, Mortara decided to use attack mode for the second time, so Lotterer and Vandorn’s cars were ahead. Soon there was a short fight between the Porsche and Mercedes drivers, of which Vandoorne was the winner – he led the race.

But he was briefly in the lead, as Mortara quickly regained the lead. Vandorn was 0.7 seconds behind the Swiss and the Belgian was chased by Vergne, who again returned to 3rd position. But the Frenchman also had the Fan Boost function at his disposal – the right to use the increased power mode, which he was given following the vote of the fans.

This helped Verne Vandoorne stay ahead and attempt to overtake the frontrunner. With three laps to go, he was able to get close to Mortara, with the Swiss using more battery power. then Jean Eric.

In Turn 7, the two-time Formula E champion attempted an attack and looked like he could take the lead, but he miscalculated a bit and Mortara held onto the lead. Moreover, in this situation Edoardo managed to extend the lead to one and a half seconds, while Vergnu had to defend himself against the active attacks of Vandoorne.

And yet Jean-Eric managed to maintain second position – Stoffel crossed the finish line just 0.205 seconds behind him. And Edoardo Mortara took his second win of the season, much to the delight of the Venturi team, of course.

With such results, Vandorn maintained the championship lead, and Vergne remained in second place in the personal standings, although he narrowed the gap to just three points, so tomorrow’s race at the same track will inevitably involve further adjustments to the balance of power. bring over. Jaguar driver Mitch Evans, who finished fifth today, is still third in the championship standings.

At the same time, the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team leads the World Electric Car Championship team standings after seven races of the season.
